Pacman fans steal Hatton show

FILIPINO fight fans turned Manchester into Manny-chester when their hero came face to face with Ricky Hatton.
Hatton and ther world pound-for-pound number one Manny Pacquiao smiled and laughed together as they met at the Trafford Centre today, to officially launch their super-fight on May 2 in Las Vegas.
It was intended as a fan rally, with Hatton fans showing up to cheer and sing for the Hitman – but around 200 Pacquiao fans stole the show.
They had come from all over the country – including a delegation from the Philippines embassy in London – and at first made themselves heard as they shouted and cheered their man, who had God-like status among his people.
Pacquiao was delighted with his reception: “This is my first time in England and I would like to thank everyone for turning out.
“The fight will be a great challenge because Ricky is a great fighter. It will be a once in a lifetime fight, the kind you only see once in boxing history.”
Hatton was confident that the fact he is unbeaten at light-welterweight – his only defeat coming when he moved up to welterweight to face Floyd Mayweather Junior – was crucial.
“I am unbeaten at 140 pounds, and believe I am unbeatable at that limit. This is a fight between two nice men, but there is nothing nice about either me or Manny when we get inside the ring.
“We are both aggressive, but in recent fights everyone has been a bit worried about Manny’s aggression. I know a man who won’t be bothered by it, and that’s me.”
HattonÂ’s fans, backed by the Sheffield Wednesday band, rallied behind their man, as bemused shoppers looked on.
The turn-out by Filipino fans did not surprise Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum, who said: “When Manny goes into the ring he fights for the 90million people in his country, and the ten million Filipinos who live around the world.
“He is a tremendous athlete and unlike any other champion we have ever promoted.
“When Manny walks to the ring he carries the weight of his country on his shoulders and he fights with all of his heart, every second of every round.”
With the two fighters greeting each other with cordial respect, it was left to the trainers to provide the first bad blood of the build-up.
Americans Floyd Mayweather Senior and Freddie Roach have a long history of mutual hatred, and Mayweather’s face was like thunder when Arum introduced Pacquiao’s trainer Roach as “the greatest trainer in the world.”
Mayweather, never shy of controversy, grabbed the mike and said: “If anybody thinks Freddie ‘the Joke’ Roach can out-train me, they have to be sick.”
Roach retorted: “It’s a shame Floyd senior isn’t in the Hall of Fame.”
“He should be in the Hall of Shame!” crowed Hatton’s man, as the two boxers looked on and laughed.
Mayweather had to have the last word, poetically predicting Hatton would de-throne Pacquiao: “When he beat the world legend Oscar de la Hoya, he was over the hill, now it’s time for you to swallow the same old pill.
“When it comes Manny, then you had better be ready, because I don’t want you to blame it on Freddie.”
Does he has any chance going up in heavyweight to win title?
Worst champ in Heavyweight is Chagaev i think.

As Pacquiao proved, Diaz must attack Marquez (and Juarez must attack John)

« Previous A classic “Far Side” cartoon from the ‘80s contained the best ringside advice ever. The combatants are a buffalo and an Indian inside a small circle, with their right feet parallel and right hands clasped in an agility game you may have played yourself. The buffalo’s entourage yells, “Just trample him, Vince!. He’s drawing you into his kind of fight.”
Stablemates Juan Diaz and Rocky Juarez would do well to take it to heart Saturday when they fight as underdogs Saturday on HBO in their hometown, Houston. Diaz should try to trample Juan Manuel Marquez in their showdown for lightweight supremacy. And that goes double for Juarez, who needs to assert superior strength against unbeaten Chris John, the longtime-yet-obscure featherweight champion from Indonesia. IÂ’m rooting for the Texans but not counting on an upset in either fight.
My penchant for Diaz and Juarez has a regional angle. I lived in South Texas for about five years and root heavily for Mexican-Americans from there, especially those from Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley and usually those from San Antonio. But even for those who hate Texas, Diaz and Juarez have been two of the most attractive lower-weights prospects in boxing, yet neither has truly asserted himself.
Diaz is considered one of the two or three best lightweights, but he has been undermined by his upset loss to Nate Campbell last year and a tendency to rack up far fewer knockouts than youÂ’d think by looking at him and then seeing his aggressive ring style. Against Marquez, a close second to Manny Pacquiao in the current pound-for-pound sweepstakes, Diaz needs to overwhelm the elegant former featherweight and junior lightweight champion. Diaz should risk getting tagged with counter punches, because he wonÂ’t win landing fewer punches than Marquez.
Juarez was dominated by Marquez in 2007 at 130, and now heÂ’s down to 126 to chase the defensive-minded champion. Juarez is always trying prove himself the slick boxer and starts posing instead of doing the damage heÂ’s fully capable of doing. His losses to Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera (twice) and Humberto Soto stamped him as less than elite, but that doesnÂ’t mean heÂ’s unworthy of holding one of boxingÂ’s 70-or-whatever world title belts.
Marquez-Diaz is a genuine world lightweight championship fight. Props to Golden Boy Promotions for insisting that the lightweight belts Campbell squandered two weeks ago when he failed to make weight for his 135-pound defense against Ali Funeca be awarded to the Marquez-Diaz winner. Pacquiao also has given up a lightweight belt and declared himself a 140-pounder.
Campbell is on his way to 140 pounds after barely outpointing Funeca. I must disagree with fellow Examiner Vivek WallaceÂ’s premise that Campbell poses a threat to Pacquiao or Ricky Hatton at 140, but I admit I never saw the Diaz-Campbell fight, in which CampbellÂ’s performance was a blueprint for Diaz to use against Marquez.
A return bout with Campbell would have provided redemption for Diaz, but beating Marquez would redeem him a lot more.
I'm calling it this way. I might look like a complete idiot, but from what I've seen from Arreola, I think the guy is very overrated, and limited. McLine is actually a decent test, and I don't think Arreola passes it.
